Schedule your periodic Ground-Resistance inspection and test NOW to maintain your Lightning Protection System integrity.
Certified Inspector #3044 - Lightning Protection Institute
Ground resistance describes the path that conducts electrical currents (often more than 30,000 Amps) to ground when lightning strikes occur.
If lightning strikes, your system of lightning rods and cables carry harmful electrical currents from your home to ground safely if the path is low-resistance.
High resistance can produce a voltage high enough to spark across to nearby plumbing, electrical wiring, etc causing massive heat damage or fire. It also can result in strong electromagnetic fields that can result in damage or destroy electronic equipment.
Ground resistance can range from a few 10s of ohms to a few 100s of ohms. Most Lightning Protection standards recommend that ground resistance be less than 50 ohms. However, values of 5 ohms or less are easily achieved and are desirable.
Consult a qualified LPI or UL certified Lightning Protection System installer for advice and suggested remedial action.
Changing soil conditions as well as loose connections, corrosion and other factors may dramatically increase ground resistance. Periodic testing is recommended to maintain system integrity,
